UNESCO’s regional efforts: advancing youth climate action, mental health, and emergency education response

As part of the pre-activities for the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29), which will take place in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the UNESCO Cairo Regional Office, in collaboration with the Social and Human Sciences Programme, led efforts to support the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) in Egypt.
As part of the pre-activities for the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29), which will take place in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the UNESCO Cairo Regional Office, in collaboration with the Social and Human Sciences Programme, led efforts to support the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) in Egypt. The event, organized on 26 October 2024 under YOUNGO—the official youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—provided a platform for young people to engage in climate action initiatives. Through a specialized training, UNESCO introduced its Toolbox for Youth Policy and Programming: Because Youth Perspectives Matter, an innovative resource designed to support youth in influencing climate policies. This initiative empowered young participants to actively shape climate solutions at both national and global levels, underscoring UNESCO’s commitment to youth-led change.

In the same vein, UNESCO Cairo was a contributor to the second Global Congress on Population, Health, and Human Development, held from 21–25 October 2024, in Egypt. During the session on “Mental Health & Resilience,” representatives from UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) highlighted the role of digital learning in promoting peace and social-emotional skills. Ms. Shreya Tiwari shared insights into UNESCO’s efforts to support mental health through technology, while Dr. Ali Hussein discussed the contextual adaptation of UNESCO MGIEP’s courses for Egypt.

The Congress also emphasized several educational recommendations for advancing human development. These include prioritizing investment in pre-primary and primary education to extend years of schooling, strengthening higher education and scientific research, and addressing school dropout rates to reduce illiteracy. Additional recommendations focused on the necessity of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, and advancing gender equality and digital skills for the future of work.

On 23 October, UNESCO’s Multisectoral Regional Office in Beirut joined forces with Lebanon’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) to launch the Education Emergency Costed Response Plan (EECRP). This initiative focuses on ensuring access to quality education, delivering psychosocial support, enhancing teacher training, and building resilience within Lebanon’s education system. Against a backdrop of ongoing economic and social crises, this collaboration reaffirms UNESCO’s dedication to supporting education in emergency settings and fostering stability through learning.

تُحرز المدن العربية تقدمًا كبيرًا في مجال التنمية المستدامة والتعلم مدى الحياة، مع تركيز متزايد على إنشاء بيئات تعليمية شاملة تُسهم في تحقيق الأهداف التنموية المحلية والعالمية. وقد احتفلت جوائز مدن التعلم لعام 2024، التي تُمنح من قِبَل اليونسكو، بهذه الجهود، مبرزةً المدن العربية التي تميزت في بناء مجتمعات تعليمية.

مؤتمر اليونسكو العالمي الثالث للموارد التعليمية المفتوحة: تعزيز الوصول الشامل إلى المعرفة

انطلق مؤتمر اليونسكو العالمي الثالث للموارد التعليمية المفتوحة (OER) في 19 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 2024، في مركز دبي التجاري العالمي في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، ليكون المرة الأولى التي يُستضاف فيها هذا الحدث في العالم العربي. نظّم مؤتمر اليونسكو بالتعاون مع مؤسسة محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم للمعرفة (MBRF)واستقطب أكثر من 500 مشارك ومشاركة من نخبة القادة العالميين، وصنّاع السياسات، وممثلي المؤسسات التعليمية، بما في ذلك وزراء، وأكاديميون، وخبراء من القطاع الخاص. وتركّزت المناقشات على مدار يومين حول تعزيز الاستفادة من الموارد التعليمية المفتوحة والتقنيات الناشئة، بهدف تحقيق وصول عادل وشامل إلى التعليم، وتقليص الفجوة الرقمية على الصعيد العالمي.
