At the heart of every empowered girl lies a dedicated educator guiding her towards success, freedom, and self-actualization. UNESCO’s ongoing mission to transform education worldwide is rooted in the belief that teachers are the catalysts for change, especially when it comes to promoting gender equality and fostering environments where girls can thrive.

Teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds, not just academically but also socially and emotionally. They are in a unique position to challenge stereotypes, dismantle barriers, and promote a gender-equitable learning environment. UNESCO recognizes the power of educators in leveling the playing field for girls and is committed to supporting them through policy advocacy, capacity-building programs, and global initiatives.

As societies continue to evolve, teachers are called upon to adapt their methods to ensure that girls—particularly those from marginalized and underserved communities—receive the quality education they deserve. From the rural villages of North Africa to the classrooms of the Middle East, teachers have been the frontline workers in addressing the unique challenges girls face in accessing education. In many regions, barriers such as early marriage, cultural norms, and inadequate sanitation facilities disproportionately affect girls’ ability to attend and complete school. UNESCO’s programs and campaigns work hand-in-hand with educators to confront these challenges.

Through its flagship program Her Education, Our Future, UNESCO has been making substantial strides in improving educational opportunities for girls. Central to this program is the recognition of teachers as agents of change. UNESCO equips educators with gender-sensitive teaching methods and curriculum resources that not only address the academic needs of girls but also nurture leadership skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence.

Another aspect of UNESCO's vision is its emphasis on digital inclusion. In the 21st century, access to digital tools and education is paramount, and the digital divide—particularly for girls in developing countries—remains a pressing issue. To tackle this, UNESCO is working closely with educators to integrate ICT (Information and Communication Technology) into their classrooms. Training programs like the Digital Skills for Life and Work initiative empower teachers to offer girls the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Empowering teachers to be advocates for girls’ education is at the forefront of UNESCO's agenda. To this end, UNESCO has launched various professional development programs designed to enhance teachers’ abilities to create inclusive and empowering learning environments. Training teachers to be sensitive to gender dynamics, equipping them with modern pedagogical tools, and offering them ongoing support are all part of UNESCO’s multifaceted approach.

One such initiative is the Global Education Coalition, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to offer educators resources and support to maintain learning continuity, particularly for girls at risk of dropping out. UNESCO ensures that educators are well-equipped to face crises and mitigate their impact on vulnerable learners, especially girls.

To achieve lasting change, UNESCO besides providing resources, it forges partnerships with governments, NGOs, and local communities to reform policies that limit girls’ educational opportunities. UNESCO advocates for laws and policies that promote free and compulsory education, eliminate discriminatory practices, and ensure that all girls have access to safe learning environments.

An example of this advocacy can be seen in UNESCO’s work to address school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV). Teachers are trained not only to recognize and prevent violence but also to foster a culture of respect, safety, and equality in the classroom. Schools should be havens where all learners, regardless of gender, can learn without fear, and teachers are at the forefront of ensuring this.

UNESCO’s commitment to girls' education is reinforced by its belief that empowered girls can transform their communities, nations, and the world. At the heart of this transformation are teachers who, when equipped with the right tools, training, and support, can create a brighter future for millions of girls globally. Indeed, educators are the unsung heroes in the global effort to achieve gender equality in education. As they continue to inspire, challenge, and inspire the girls in their classrooms, UNESCO stands firmly beside them, offering its support to ensure that every girl, regardless of where she lives, can fulfill her potential.
