In celebration of the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) under the theme “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities,” the global community rallies together in a concerted effort towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) realization. This significant occasion serves as a powerful call to action, highlighting the imperative of collective collaboration to ensure that the SDGs are not only rescued but also achieved inclusively and equitably alongside individuals with disabilities.

UNESCO has long advocated removing education barriers and fostering inclusive learning environments. This commitment aligns with the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development, emphasizing a rights-based approach to ensure no one is left behind, especially the most vulnerable.

The inclusion of learners with disabilities in education extends beyond providing them with access to schooling and infrastructure; It involves offering accessible learning resources, establishing safe and welcoming environments, adequately training and supporting teachers and staff, and collaborating with schools and communities to address issues of bullying, stigma, and discrimination.

UNESCO plays a pivotal role in advocating for inclusive education globally, emphasizing the importance of accessible and quality learning for individuals with disabilities. UNESCO’s work in this area is basically guided by the UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in Education (1960), Sustainable Development Goal 4 and the Education 2030 Framework for Action which highlight the role of inclusion and equity as fundamental pillars for achieving quality education worldwide.
