The rapid and unprecedented shift to educational technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the way students accessed formal learning, relying heavily on internet-connected digital devices, televisions, and radios. However, the UNESCO report "An Ed-Tech Tragedy?" takes a critical look at this transition and its adverse consequences.
 
The 654-page report concludes that the available data strongly indicate that, despite the bright spots in educational technology experiments during the COVID-19 pandemic, which deserve attention, they have been largely overshadowed by failure. It addresses the many negative and unintended consequences of the shift to educational technology, particularly the exacerbation of "staggering" educational inequalities worldwide. It also details how education declined even in cases where technology was available and functioned as intended. In addition, the report highlights how the heavy reliance on online distance learning during the pandemic diverted attention from more equitable ways and alternatives to educating children at home.

This insightful report unpacks the challenges and missteps of this digital transformation, offering valuable lessons and recommendations. It emphasizes the importance of ensuring that technology serves as a facilitator rather than a disruptor in the pursuit of universal, inclusive, equitable, and human-centered public education. Insights from Tarbiyah21 Repository webinar series

The UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Beirut recently hosted a series of webinars, as part of the Tarbiyah21 Repository of Teaching and Learning Practices’ project, aimed at improving education quality across the Arab world. UNESCO- Iraq's Ministry of Education transforming vocational education

UNESCO's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, in collaboration with Iraq's Ministry of Education and supported generously by the EU, has played a pivotal role in enhancing vocational education and employability in the country. Focusing on five “Pilot” schools in Erbil, Mosul, Baghdad, Karbala, and Basra, the initiative aims to transform these institutions into Centers of Vocational Excellence.
