The world stands at a critical juncture in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the newly released Special Edition of the SDGs Report prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), in collaboration with over 50 international and regional agencies within the UN Statistical System organizations, is a rallying cry for decisive action. Drawing on the latest data and estimates, this report offers an honest assessment of our progress so far while igniting hope for a future of transformative change.
Amidst existing gaps, the report urges the global community to redouble its efforts, armed with the potent combination of strong political will and cutting-edge technologies, resources, and knowledge. The potential for success is immense, but the time for action is now. Together, we can reignite progress towards the SDGs and illuminate a brighter future for all.
While we celebrate achievements, the report acknowledges the impact of global challenges such as the climate crisis, conflicts like the war in Ukraine, a fragile global economy, and the lingering aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. These hurdles have revealed weaknesses and hindered our advancement towards the Goals.
Of utmost concern is the recognition that the world's poorest and most vulnerable bear the brunt of these unprecedented challenges. To rescue the SDGs and deliver meaningful progress for people and the planet by 2030, urgent action is required.
The words of António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, ring loud and clear: "Unless we act now, the 2030 Agenda will become an epitaph for a world that might have been." This is a wake-up call for every individual and nation to step up and be part of the change.
As the only official UN report monitoring global progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it provides a comprehensive midpoint assessment, utilizing the latest available data and estimates sourced from over 200 countries and territories. It lays bare the impacts of multiple crises on people's lives and livelihoods while identifying areas where acceleration is vital for achieving our shared ambitions.
In alignment with the urgent call to action presented in the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition, world leaders convened in New York on the 18th and 19th of September 2023 for the 2023 SDG Summit, a highly anticipated event that marked the midpoint review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the progress towards achieving the 17 SDGs. The summit adopted a crucial political declaration, informed by reports such as the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report and the 2023 Special Edition of the SDG Progress Report by the Secretary-General. The summit featured high-level discussions, dialogues, and statements from key figures, including the President of the General Assembly and the President of the UN Economic and Social Council. It provided a platform for Heads of State and Government to present concrete national commitments to SDG transformation through six Leaders' Dialogues, involving various stakeholders such as the UN system, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, civil society, and academia.
