A research project conducted in Oman in 2023, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI), has shed light on the state of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in Omani schools. Led by Dr Khalaf Marhoun al Abri from Sultan Qaboos University, the Omani researchers thoroughly examined the incorporation of global citizenship principles and concepts within the country's education policies.
The study affirmed the Sultanate's dedication to promoting education for global citizenship by incorporating relevant principles and elements into policy documents. However, it also emphasized the need for a reevaluation and reinforcement of these principles within Omani schools. As a result of the research findings, the team developed a teacher training programme, which was successfully implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science.
This programme, designed to support GCED, received regional recognition when the UNESCO Office in Doha adopted it and implemented it in UNESCO-affiliated schools in Kuwait in 2023, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. GCED is UNESCO's response to global challenges such as human rights violations, inequality, and poverty, which pose threats to peace and sustainability. Its aim is to empower learners of all ages, making them aware that these issues are not limited to local contexts but are global in nature. By doing so, it encourages individuals to actively promote more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, secure, and sustainable societies.
The Omani researchers focused their efforts on analyzing school education policies and plans, particularly in primary schools, to assess their alignment with the objectives of global citizenship education. Additionally, the research team investigated the challenges faced when implementing education for global citizenship at the primary school level.
This research project holds significant importance as it aligns with Oman's aspirations to be a global advocate for peace and coexistence. It also supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals 2030 by analyzing educational policies and plans in Oman to ensure they reflect both national and international trends in global citizenship education. The findings of this research have been published in the journals Sustainability and Citizenship, Social and Economic Education.
