The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) opened a school garden funded by the European Union (EU) at the UNRWA Beit Hanoun Elementary Co-educational School in the besieged Gaza Strip in the presence of Mr Ayman Fteiha, Head of the EU office in Gaza, and Ms Fatma Aita, UNRWA Education Area Officer.

The event was part of the EU-UNRWA “community greening” initiative, which aims to provide outdoor spaces for the Palestine refugee community to come together, as well as to promote environmental awareness and recycling, nutritional education, and relaxation. The green spaces not only beautify the neighborhood, but also increase outdoor activity and social interaction. During the ceremony, students showed off their knowledge of recycling and delivered a performance about environmental awareness. Additionally, they participated in physical activities and planted the final trees with Mr Fteiha.

UNRWA also opened an EU-funded school garden at the UNRWA Hussein Co-Ed School 1 & 2 in Hussein Camp, Jordan. The ceremony brought together Butros Janho, Acting Deputy Director of Operations of UNRWA, H.E. Maria Hadjitheodosiou, EU Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and Palestine Refugee students from UNRWA Hussein Co-Ed School 1 & 2 School.
