The Transforming Education Summit: a turning point for education

الهدف الرابع من أهداف التنمية المستدامة
2022 - 08 - 10
“The Transforming Education Summit will seek to renew our collective commitment to education and lifelong learning as a pre-eminent public good.” ANTÓNIO GUTERRES, United Nations Secretary-General.

Education is a fundamental human right and a foundation for peace, tolerance, other human rights and sustainable development. It is based on this idea that Mr Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, announced in his report to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on "Our Common Agenda," that he intended to hold a Transforming Education Summit (TES) on September 19, 2022 during the UNGA’s 77th session.

The event is planned as a response to two extremely pressing and intricately intertwined challenges to guaranteeing excellent education and lifelong learning for all. First, the learning crisis that is denying hundreds of millions of children and youths their right to quality education; and, second, the inflexibility of traditional education systems and their inability to provide children, youth and adults with the required knowledge and skills to thrive in today’s world and be active contributors in building sustainable and peaceful futures.

The Transforming Education Summit will seek to renew our collective commitment to education and lifelong learning as a pre-eminent public good.ANTÓNIO GUTERRES, UN Secretary-General.

The TES preparations follow a focused, intensive, inclusive, bottom-up approach that responds to Member State priorities and ensures the meaningful engagement of youth and education stakeholders. The process started with national consultations with experts, youth and other education stakeholders, followed by a Pre-Summit that took place in Paris, in June 2022, thus building a momentum for the main event in September.

The Summit will draw on the findings emerging from the review of implementation of SDG4 at the 2022 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and is expected to galvanize action, ambition, solidarity and solutions to overcome the learning losses caused by COVID-19, reimagine the future of education and revive national and global efforts to achieve the education goals and targets enshrined in SDGs by 2030.

Every person is invited to learn about, engage and participate in the Summit, contribute to the Transforming Education Knowledge Hub, and spread the word about transforming education.
