“Adult education still does not reach those who need it most and efforts will be doubled to ensure learning from the cradle to the grave”
The Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII) was held in Marrakech, from 15 to 17 June 2022, under the motto “Adult learning and education for sustainable development – a transformative agenda” and concluded with the signing of the Marrakech Framework for Action on Adult Learning and Education by 142 UNESCO Member States.

The Conference constituted a platform for more than 1,000 stakeholders to discuss Adult Learning and Education (ALE) challenges, opportunities and progress, visit the key findings of UNESCO's Fifth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE 5), and come up with a roadmap to advance ALE over the next 12 years.

Following UNESCO’s call for a new social contract for education, CONFINTEA VII allowed stakeholders to explore ways to harness Adult Learning and Education's (ALE) transformative power for sustainable development, especially in the face of challenges, such as the climate crisis, fast technological advancements, and the evolving labor market.

In light of the above, UNESCO Member States adopted the Marrakech Framework for Action that lays out key action areas in the field of ALE for the next decade. They also committed to enhance ALE governance and quality, and to considerably improve adult participation in learning, acknowledged that ALE needs more financial investment, and pledged to put inclusion at the center of their initiatives to ensure that everyone can benefit from lifelong learning and that no one is left behind.
