Syria organises national workshop on transforming education

The Syrian Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in partnership with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), held a national workshop under the theme “Transforming education is an urgent necessity for our common future” in the presence of high officials and relevant academic and educational experts from both ministries.
The meeting tackled issues such as the importance of establishing a strategic collaborative partnership between the Ministries of Education and Higher Education and Scientific Research, the profound impact of education on development, especially in cases of emergencies and in the aftermath of conflicts and wars. Other topics include the need for developing education systems, leveraging the digital revolution for the benefit of public education, and investing more fairly and effectively in education.
The workshop culminated in a number of recommendations to empower individuals to ensure long-term social and economic welfare. Key recommendations are listed below:
- preparing teachers to transition from traditional teaching to collaborative learning,
- developing education systems for early childhood,
- adapting teaching models to fit the requirements of the 21st century in terms of digital transformation and sustainable development,
- providing equal learning opportunities, and
- making universities centers of creativity, excellence, and leadership.

Insights from Tarbiyah21 Repository webinar series
The UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Beirut recently hosted a series of webinars, as part of the Tarbiyah21 Repository of Teaching and Learning Practices’ project, aimed at improving education quality across the Arab world. The series, which ran from September to December 2023, covered a range of critical topics, including Quality Teaching and Learning (6 September), Promoting Arabic Literacy (7 September), Digital Transformation of Education (24 October), Education for Sustainable Development/Greening Education (28 November) and Teacher Professional Development (12 December).

UNESCO- Iraq's Ministry of Education transforming vocational education
UNESCO's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, in collaboration with Iraq's Ministry of Education and supported generously by the EU, has played a pivotal role in enhancing vocational education and employability in the country. Focusing on five “Pilot” schools in Erbil, Mosul, Baghdad, Karbala, and Basra, the initiative aims to transform these institutions into Centers of Vocational Excellence.
